Welcome to Skimm Tested, where we put products to the test and then give 'em a report card. (Check out all of our tried and tested faves here.)

The assignment…

To see if Magic Spoon cereal ($54/6 pack) —with at least 12 grams of protein per serving —tastes as good as our favorite childhood cereals and keeps us fuller for longer. PS: Use code SKIMM5 for $5 off your purchase.

Straight A’s in…

  • Flavor. Great flavors that you can recognize and don’t taste artificial. Blueberry tastes like blueberry and cinnamon roll is laden with richness. Our favorites would have to be peanut butter or cocoa to satisfy our sweet tooth. Some of the more dessert-like flavors like frosted and cookies and cream are a little too sweet for our liking.

  • Crunch. We found this cereal to be great to munch on, especially while standing over the kitchen sink. Sometimes it comes out of the box in clusters like granola, which we particularly liked. When milk is added (we tried with almond, oat, and dairy milk), the crunch remains but has a melt-in-your-mouth feel. We even let it sit for about five minutes, and the O’s were softer but not soggy.

  • Satisfaction. We tried a bowl for breakfast, lunch, an afternoon snack, an after-dinner dessert, and a late-night snack. Every time and in every situation, our hunger was satiated. We didn’t feel like we were back standing in front of an open fridge staring longingly at what to eat next. When eaten before bed, we drifted off to sleep happily full.

Room for growth…

  • Texture. While we love the crunchiness, we did find ourselves wanting to brush our teeth after enjoying a bowl. The cereal has a bit of a corn-puff feel and can stick in your teeth. Not a huge con if you’re eating them for breakfast or before bed, as you’d brush your teeth after anyway. We definitely did.

  • Heartiness. We did find ourselves wanting to add to the cereal to bulk it up a bit. We added fruit most often, but also sprinkled granola and chocolate chips into our bowls as a small treat. The good news — there’s not really much you can’t mix in.

  • Cost. If you’re buying the 6 pack, each box comes out to be about $9, containing about 5 servings each. Therefore each bowl costs around $1.80. That’s a bit pricey, especially if it’s your go-to breakfast and you’re burning through boxes.

Plays well with…

  • Cereal lovers who want something a little more nutritious.

  • Those who love adding fruit to their breakfast. This cereal pairs well with blueberries, bananas, strawberries — you name it.

  • Those who are gluten-free or gluten-sensitive, or just want a high-protein snack or breakfast option but without the added carbs and sugar.

Gets extra credit for…

  • The subscription option. For 25% off, you can choose how often you want shipments to be delivered.

  • You can build your own variety pack, choosing four out of the nine flavors.

  • Creativity. Flavors like frosted, cookies and cream, and cinnamon roll make eating the cereal way more fun.

How we did our homework…

  • One editor taste-tested Magic Spoon as a breakfast option over the course of several weeks. She tried all flavors available, ate them at different times of day, with and without added toppings. She was mindful of how full she felt after eating, paying special attention to how long she could go after breakfast before feeling hunger pangs. She noted richness of flavor, texture, and general tastiness if being eaten as a snack. Additionally, we incorporated anecdotal evidence from other Skimm HQ’rs who’ve tried Magic Spoon and could speak to its general quality.

Footnotes…
