When you’re building a travel capsule wardrobe, the name of the game is versatility. With limited room in your suitcase, you need to make sure each piece you bring can work double duty, appropriate for both day and night. If you can only wear it once, and/or in highly selective conditions, leave it at home.

Instead, opt for elevated basics — like great-fitting jeans, cashmere sweaters, and classic blazers — that can be mixed, matched, and accessorized to suit any number of occasions. These pieces are also comfortable (because nothing ruins a majestic view more than a pair of too-tight pants), and don’t take up a ton of room in your suitcase. The other name of the game? Leaving enough space in there for souvenirs.

Looking for more affordable, stylish clothes? Here’s what to wear when working, traveling, playing, and expecting.

reformation cashmere sweater
Reformation

A perfectly oversized cashmere sweater…

Reformation may be known for wedding guest dresses and going-out tops, but they also make some of the best cashmere sweaters on the market. This Boyfriend Sweater is one editor’s holy grail. It’s the softest sweater she owns, and it’s roomy enough to layer over a T-shirt while still looking polished. And since it’s not super thick, you can easily tuck it into jeans to look even more put-together. She’s asking for it in another color for the holidays this year. One is simply not enough. ($168, Reformation)

stuart weitzman chelsea boots
Stuart Weitzman

Chelsea boots you’ll wear forever…

Chelsea boots are ideal for a travel capsule wardrobe since they’re super comfortable and look great with everything. And since they don’t have laces or buttons, they’ll get you out the door of your hotel (or that boutique changing room) in seconds. These have a small stacked heel — which we think is even more comfortable than a completely flat sole — and an almond-shaped toe that won’t squish your toes. Wear these on the plane to save even more room in your suitcase. ($238, Stuart Weitzman)
