The assignment…

To see if the Hey Dewy portable humidifier ($59.95) lives up to its recent buzz — and if it’s truly worth adding it to our daily routine.

Straight A's in…

  • Efficiency. Like all humidifiers, the device works to add moisture to the surrounding air, and our testers all agreed that it does the job very well. It produces a steady mist once fully charged, and it also features the option to run intermittently in order to extend its capacity. One of our testers, who has allergies and tends to experience year-round sniffles in the mornings, noticed a marked difference after using the Hey Dewy humidifier on her bedside table for several weeks. She noted that her nasal congestion improved, her sniffles went away, and she hasn’t had a sore throat in the AM (which she often experiences otherwise). From a skincare perspective, all testers found it to help with making their skin feel more hydrated after consistent use.

  • Portability. The major selling point of the Hey Dewy humidifier is just how compact and portable it is. Given that it’s wireless, charging via USB and running several hours on one charge, it’s easy to take it to the office, pack it in a suitcase, or use it in a car during daily commutes. If you’re someone with dry skin or who experiences regular congestion, a to-go humidifier could be a game changer.

  • Ease of use. Once the humidifier is charged, all you have to do is fill it with water (there’s a clear max-fill line indicated on the inside), twist the top back on, and press the power button. Voila: an enjoyable mist at your service.

  • Aesthetics. The design is sleek and minimalist, and it comes in pretty, muted hues in addition to white.

Room for growth…

  • Price. While all of our testers found the device to work well and agree that it’s something they’ll continue to use regularly, they also felt like the price for this humidifier was just a little steep given its size.

  • Charging capacity. A full charge is said to last up to eight hours, though in our testers’ experience it typically ran for closer to six. If you’re someone who’s going to use this every night while you sleep, you’ll have to make sure to charge it every day so it runs through most of the night. While we appreciate the fact that the device is wireless, we’d love it if a single charge provided twice as much juice (or if it were battery-operated). Some customer reviews have noted issues with the humidifier holding a charge after months of use, but we haven’t experienced anything in this regard; we will update this review if so. Note that there is also a corded version of the Hey Dewy humidifier.

  • A finicky cap. The cap twists on and off, but doesn’t always line up perfectly on the first try when putting it back on, so you’ll have to position it just right. Not a deal breaker by any means, but something to note.

Plays well with…

  • Those with dry skin who could benefit from a regular source of moisture, particularly during the winter or in an arid climate.

  • Anyone who tends to wake up a bit congested or sniffly and doesn’t want to invest in — or doesn’t have the space for — a larger humidifier.

  • People who travel often or have long commutes in their vehicle.

Gets extra credit for…

  • An LED night-light function that easily turns on and off.

  • A very quiet buzz as a natural function of the humidifier that adds a slightly white-noise sound to the room if there’s stark silence.

How we did our homework...

  • Three editors each used the Hey Dewy portable humidifier regularly for several weeks to several months. We used it on our bedside table, during commutes, and on our desk during a workday — noting how well it worked to make us feel less congested in the mornings as well as whether it helped make our skin feel more hydrated. We took into consideration how long a single charge lasted, how easy it was to use right out of the package, and general functionality of the product. We also read through customer reviews for anecdotal information about long-term use.
