I first heard of Brooks while out for a walk with a friend. We were discussing certain changes your body goes through when you enter your thirties, like worse hangovers, slower recoveries after workouts, and emerging joint pain. You know, the fun stuff. “That’s why you have to invest in better footwear,” she said, before pointing to her Brooks running shoes. As someone who struggles with knee pain but loves a morning run, I was curious to see if Brooks’ newest Glycerin Max running shoes could alleviate some of my aches and pains…and make me feel like a twenty-something again.

Why I love the Glycerin Max running shoes…

  • Thick sole. These are the thickest soles I’ve ever seen — and I grew up wearing platforms. At first I was nervous that I’d step the wrong way and twist my ankle. But I was pleasantly surprised. After a few steps, I felt more confident and comfortable, not to mention downright bouncy thanks to the soles’ innovative nitrogen-infused foam material and ultra-wide base. Post-run, my knees felt flexible and remained pain-free, which is not something I could say about my other running shoes.

  • Supportive ankle structure. Because the sole is so thick, the inside of the shoe felt a little shallower than other sneakers I own. That being said, the sides felt stiff, which made my ankles feel especially supported. These shoes aren’t going anywhere, no matter how thin or slippery my socks are. Despite the sturdier sides, they took virtually zero time to break in.

  • Lightweight. Long story short, these shoes are light — they actually feel like you’re walking on a cloud. The wide platform keeps the entire shoe plush and comfortable without weighing you down or tripping you up. A must for running shoes.

  • Breathability. I’m the kind of person who sweats from my nose to my toes, so I was happy when my socks weren’t completely damp by the end of my run. The mesh material on the top and sides of the shoe allowed for good airflow and kept my feet feeling fresh after each wear.

Other Brooks running shoes I love…

Adrenaline GTS 23

A pair with a little less cushion and a lot more “oomph”...

The Adrenaline GTS 23 style gives you the same “walking on a cloud” feeling with a little less platform. These are made with the brand’s GuideRails® technology which, in plain terms, means they have additional support on the sides to prevent muscle fatigue. These are a great choice if you’re looking for something just as comfortable as the Glycerin Max style, but with slightly less cushion. Plus, they even have a waterproof version. ($119.95

A pair that’s made for pounding pavement…

Though all of these shoes were made for running on nearly any surface, these are specially designed to give you maximum comfort while running or walking on hard surfaces. They have a “rocker,” or upward curve shape, which makes for a seamless heel-to-toe transition while you’re on the move. They also have the same nitrogen-infused foam cushioning for easier landings. A pair you can wear beyond the gym…

When I think of pairing running shoes with jeans, I tend to cringe as I think about my middle school’s uniform policy: sneakers, non-ripped jeans, and a school-sanctioned T-shirt. That being said, I would actually wear these Ghost 16 road-running shoes with any bottoms hanging in my closet. These are just as comfortable as the other shoes in this list, only a little less chunky and, I think, more versatile. I especially love that they’re made with over 60% recycled materials. Win-win.
