Why we picked Kin

What makes a family? The one you’re born into — or the one you build?

Kin by Tayari Jones follows Annie and Vernice, two girls growing up side by side in the 1950s South, both without their mothers, and bound together by that shared absence.

But as they get older, their lives begin to pull in different directions. One is shaped by ambition, expectation, and the promise of something more. The other is driven by a single question she can’t let go of: Why did my mother leave me behind?

What unfolds is a story about friendship, class, identity, and the unexpected ways our past shapes what’s possible for us.

Kin is a sweeping coming-of-age story that asks us to consider: What do we really owe the people we love?

What you’ll get when you RSVP

  • An exclusive Bookshop.org discount code for 15% off the book

  • A reading companion from the publisher with exclusive Skimm-only questions

  • A calendar invite you can add in one click

How our Off the Page book club works

1. We read four books a year.

Yes. Four. That’s it. Because between work, family, and attempting to rest, reading should feel doable — not like another obligation.

2. You’ve got time to read.

Once the book’s announced, you’ve got a couple of months to finish it. Read at your own pace.

3. RSVP and meet the author.

Every Off the Page event includes a live Q&A where you can get your questions answered.

4. You’ll meet the author

After the author leaves, we break into small groups for a book club discussion. You’ll hear different takes, trade thoughts, and maybe even see the story a little differently.

Why you’ll want in

The goal: Unpretentious time with smart, like-minded women — where a good book meets good company.

RSVP to join theSkimm’s book club and start reading Kin with us today.

See you there. ✨
