Naomi Osaka is a four-time Grand Slam tennis champion, winning all four titles before the age of 25. No big deal. But it’s not just her performance on the court that’s made her a household name —  her mental health advocacy outside the court has made her a role model in the sports world.

Now, Naomi is opening up about another big aspect of her life: motherhood. In the Tubi documentary, Naomi Osaka: The Second Set, the tennis champ gives fans an intimate look at what it was like to return to the sport after welcoming her daughter in 2023.

Ahead of the documentary’s premiere on August 24, Naomi spoke to theSkimm and shed more light on motherhood and her mental health work. Plus, she also shared some of the light stuff too, like her favorite stadium snack and least favorite fashion trend.

On Knowing She Can Do “Anything”

“Childbirth was the most painful experience of my life so when something is tough, I remind myself that if I can do that, I can do just about anything.”

How Tennis and Parenting Collide

“Tennis is a sport where you need to exhibit patience and resilience as we’re often at the mercy of the weather or a preceding match. I definitely channel that same patience and resilience being a mom.”

Her Evolution as Role Model

“I remember being inspired by my role models as a kid so to be that person for someone else is an honor that I do not take lightly. I just think about the kind of person I’d want my daughter to have as a role model and try to emulate that as best as I can while staying true to myself.”

Why Prioritizing Mental Health Will Always Be a Priority

“It was a tough decision to step back and prioritize my mental health, especially under so much scrutiny, but it taught me to trust myself and block out outside noise.”

On Where She Draws Fashion Inspiration

“Traveling the world for tennis allows me to meet so many interesting people and have amazing experiences that always keep me feeling inspired creatively.”

…. and Her Least Favorite Trend

“I’m not a big fan of polka dots and they seem to be having a moment.”

And What She Loves to Snack on in the Stands

“This may be a boring answer, but I love unsalted nuts.”
